Why are these two Congressmen worried? The answer is as complicated as the economic problems they so diligently face.

House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) (shown right) and Minority Leader Spencer Bachus (R-AL) are faced with coping on a daily basis with the near total collapse of our economic systems and the loss of faith in fundamental institutions. Each day they are confronted with new bad news from an economy in trouble and a world expecting solutions, in large part from these two men.

While both have political differences of opinion, in this crisis, they have demonstrated an exceptional willingness to work together, collaboratively and amicably, to find the best solutions for each problem that arises.

Neither of them knows what is going to happen at any moment the phone rings in their offices or homes. What new crisis looms on the horizon? It must take inordinate courage to answer the phone or check their email.

No matter what that crisis may be, these two men have shown extraordinary ability to deal professionally with some of the most difficult issues facing government in nearly 100 years. They've done an excellent job so far, and Americans should be pleased they both work so well together.

They would probably both disagree with this Institute's opinion that the Nation is in the midst of a concurrent recession and depression. They'd argue the concept that one of the greatest economic depressions in history is beginning. Who knows? They may be right, simply because they're in the right position to know best.

We'll still hold to our position because we believe that the faith of the public in financial institutions and government regulation is shaken, and because the level of consumer confidence is low. We add to our opinion the long term effects of tight credit.

Our opinion aside, we heartily commend and praise these gentlemen for their honorable service to the Nation, and the strength of their leadership in the most difficult times.
