| Epicurus Institute Analysis |
| Starwood's expertise in the upper scale of lodging and hospitality is superior, but in these difficult economic times, with consumer spending at all levels being reduced and companies curtailing business travel, the risks to Starwood are considerable. That being said, this company has shown a remarkable ability to adapt to conditions in quick time, thus we belive they will more than adequately survive. We are optimistically cautious about their real property holdings and concurrently concerned about property valuations. Many of their properties were older holdings, so they should withstand the deleveraging crisis well, though debt on newer properties may pose difficulties in future. Their lesser quality brands may provide some solace, however, we believe their best bet is in their management skills. Look to Starwood to be the firm that takes over those others in the industry that fail in bad times. We recommend buying this stock while prices are low and holding long term. |
